CMC 001
(Contrast medium under development)
CMC 001 is the first orally administered contrast medium for enhancement of the liver for MRI. Because the active ingredient is manganese, which is already an essential trace element in the body, the risk of unexpected side effects is low. The uptake promoters, alanine and vitamin D3, are also well known as essential to the body.
A new class of contrast media
Clinical studies show that CMC 001 is an effective contrast agent for the detection of liver lesions such as metastases.
CMC 001 is a targeted non-gadolinium-based contrast agent. The imaging substance responsible for the contrast enhancement in MRI is manganese (II) chloride tetrahydrate. The manganese is taken up by the hepatocytes in the normal liver parenchyma, resulting in an increase in the contrast between pathological lesions and normal tissue.
Manganese shortens the longitudinal relaxation time (T1) of the targeted tissues during MRI, leading to a brighter image of liver parenchyma, hence a greater contrast. The brighter image is localized to the liver and very little change is detected post-contrast in muscles and other organs.
Liver image enhancement is best from 2 hours to 6 hours after CMC 001 is ingested, leaving a diagnostic window of at least 4 hours.
Better for medical professionals
- CMC-001-enhanced MRI offers outstanding sensitivity and delineation in the detection of focal liver lesions compared to conventional CT, ultrasound and Gadolinium-enhanced MRI scanning.
- CMC-001 is safe and simple to use; dry powder mixed with drinking water for oral administration 2 hours prior to scanning. No injections requiring nurse attendance.
- CMC-001 has a long diagnostic window, thus improving logistics in the radiological department.
- CMC-001 results in very limited systemic exposure and anaphylactic reactions are unlikely.
- The use of CMC 001 instead of other contrast agents reduces or completely eliminates the need for emergency treatment capacity at the radiological department.
- CMC-001 requires only 10 minutes in scanner and 10 minutes for image evaluation, resulting in a much improved patient throughput compared to Gadolinium-enhanced MRI.
- CMC-001 offers superior health economics due its fast scanning time and convenience.
- CMC-001 is a superior alternative to conventional CT scanning for the use in pre-operative screening and post-operative follow-up of patients with colorectal cancer and suspected metastases.
